A mother under the moonlight, hand-feeding her child rice, pointing at the moon, telling stories. That is Nela Soru. That is what this kitchen has been for 34 years.
Since 1992. Same family. Same fire.
The definitive Nela Soru — rebuilt for 2026.
The name
நிலாச்சோறு
Nela Soru — நிலாச்சோறு — literally means Moon Rice. It is the Tamil family ritual where a mother feeds her child by hand at night, pointing at the moon, telling stories while each ball of rice goes in.
The Celliah family opened the first Nela Soru on Shepard Avenue in Mississauga in 1992 — among the very first Sri Lankan Tamil kitchens in the GTA. They named it after the ritual because that is how they wanted the food to feel: made with hand, made with care, made at home.
Thirty-four years later, the recipes have not changed. The biryani is still Hyderabadi dhum — layered, sealed, slow. The kothu is still chopped on the griddle. The meal box is still Amma's thali. The address is new. The kitchen is not.
