What Moon Rice Means
நிலாச்சோறு
Nela Soru — நிலாச்சோறு — literally means Moon Rice. It is the Tamil family ritual where a mother feeds her child by hand at night, pointing at the moon, telling stories while each ball of rice goes in.
Moon Rice opened Nela Soru on Shepard Avenue in Mississauga in 1992 and named it after the Tamil family ritual. The food is meant to feel handmade, careful, and close to home.
Thirty-four years later, the recipes have not changed. The biryani is still Hyderabadi dhum — layered, sealed, slow. The kothu is still chopped on the griddle. The meal box is still Amma's thali. The address is new. The kitchen is not.
